We docked at Patras on time, found the station and within no time were tucking into fresh greek bread, feta, olives and tomatoes from the local shop, and a freddo (iced espresso — this season’s trendiest drink!) A well earned decent feast — food on the ferry was a bit sparce due to the pricey food on board and the lack of shops to purchase anything other than souvenirs in Venice, and shops being shut in Ancona (Sunday) — but we enjoyed our stale bread and jam and felt like real travellers! So we’re now out in the Adriatic, having staked out our spot on the deck beside a young Swiss couple travelling overland to Istanbul and a French family with 2 young kids. The Swiss couple are travelling with a large lily – a birthday present from him to her! They give us Swiss chocolate as they disembark at Igumenitsa for being good neighbours. [Read more →]

Our first local, supplement-free train!
An early rise at 6am and breakfast of cornflakes, white sliced toast and strawberry jam at “Sleep Cheap at Francesca’s B&B”, whilst the owners slept in the living room, giving over their two large bedrooms to paying guests. I slept badly as cannon-like fireworks boomed through the Venetian night. [Read more →]

After a 4 hour breakdown (we were told 5 minutes 2 hours ago — no-one really knows what the problem is) we’re moving on through the edge of the Alps, past Lake Maggiore, towards Milan. The plus side of the delay is that we travel this section in day light, eating our breakfast of pain au chocolat. [Read more →]

…that was Callum’s comment when we arrived in Paris last night.
Breakfast this morning at the Place du Tertre in Montmartre, next to the Sacre Couer, in a phenomenally expensive tourist cafe. You pay for the ambience…
Last night we ate felafel and pommes frites on the banks of the Seine and then experienced the most terrifying hailstorm — freak weather! Lightening flashing all over the city, torrential rain and wind.
This morning is much fresher than the sultry heat (32C) of last night. We are soaking up the ambience and munching croissants.
Callum: The Eurostar was a lot better than I expected. It was like a luxury coach inside. Tua Mia [teddy bear] got his passport stamped by a friendly French border guard.
Jane: Such a high-class experience. So smooth, so quiet, it glides gracefully onwards as those distinctive poplar groves and then the sprawl of Paris come into view.
We got a recording of the flapping timetable board at Gare du Nord for the BBC lost sounds archive (it was very exciting, Margaret!). Pink, rough loo roll told us we were truely in France. Eurostar seats were comfortable enough to sleep in. Callum and Jane particularly liked the toilets. This is such a civilised way to travel!
